Cleaning feather duvets

Post: # 153367Post JeremyinCzechRep »

A local shop offers to clean duvets at £50 a throw. I have about 6 that need doing but don't fancy spending £300. I bought some plastic netting (used to help plaster stick to walls) for 60p a metre. I bought six metres, cut it into 2 3-metre lengths and then used twine to make a cube out of the netting. I now have a cube sewn on all sides except one. I intend to buy some velcro tomorrow for the final edge. I then plan to carefully open my duvets, pour feathers into the plastic cube (outside on a warm day) and then shake it enthusiastically, allowing all the dead bed bugs, dust mites etc to fall away, leaving me with lovely fresh feathers. I'll wash the duvet covers and then replace the feathers. I've never done this before and would love to hear from someone who has tried it. I can post a picture of my plastic netting cube if anyone is interested.

Hi Jeremy,
I haven't tried anything like what you're suggesting, but it sounds like it will work.

Jerermy, I clicked on your link to your website, then clicked on something there (I think it was 'latest news' but not 100% certain now) and my computer screamed at me that a virus had been detected, and the box that popped up said it was a trojan horse. My OH normally deals with this stuff on our computer, but he's not home right now, so I don't know if this is just our antivirus software being over-sensitive, or if you have a problem with your site. My computer is OK, because our antivirus software told me what to do, but I don't know if you need to check your website and do something to put it right. I'm posting this rather than sending you a private message because I don't want any other Isher to be caught out with it. Sorry if I sound like an alarmist, but I know people who would panic if that happened to them.
Rosey xx

Sorry about that. I had problems with my website being hijacked and thought that I had fixed the problem - but didn't realise that it was downloading trojans. All I want people to do is look at some nice recipes. I've no idea why people do this sort of thing but I have to agree with you, don't come to my website until the problem is fixed.

Good news. I have cleaned my website so there are no more surprises - and I've changed my ftp password so that it will take a zillion years for someone to work it out so people can now peruse my site safely. If anyone else has a similar problem I might be able to help.

And thanks to you for bringing it to my attention.
Back to cleaning duvets... I am planning two strips of velcro on either side of one edge of my cube (which looks great!) I can then keep my feathers safely inside while I give them a good shakedown.

A night in the freezer zaps any live dust mites.

I take it you can't wash your duvet complete with feathers - our big washing machine takes duvets.

The duvets haven't been used for about six years so I would be impressed if any mites have survived that long. I iwish I had a large enough washing machine but these duvets are huge!

Alas the malcious code is back on my website so no more visitors for the moment. Google has now flagged it up as a site which contains malware (though kindly say it is probably not my fault).

Wouldn't it be best to take it off your signature until it is sorted? Because not everyone will be reading this thread and might click on your website from somewhere else that you've posted.

Good point. I have now changed my signature so that the link now points to my old website - which is completely fine - just a little out of date.

Website cleaned and I have the thumbs up from google. I wonder who these morons are who try to stop people looking at my recipes. Is it Delia? Jamie? Hugh?
