opinions needed

okay im a massive tea drinker as is the wonderful mrs f when shes round so i want an eco kettle

i have the choice of these two...which would you go for and why

I think that the tefal one got a 'best buy' in which magazine - I don't subscribe anymore, so can't check their website. But I don't think I could live with it.... it just looks weird. And if you ever use hot water from the kettle for anything else (we do cause we don't have hot running water) it would be highly impracticle.

I like that the other one heats to 85o if you like.... I think I'd go with that one personally, but it is mostly on aesthetics.

Do you have a gas hob? I love my whistling kettle, I bought a fab red one for £9.99 online, but can't remember the site, they are meant to be more eco friendly than normal kettles but maybe not as much as these new eco designs, I'm not sure. I've had mine for a few years which isn't bad for a tenner and it's very 'retro cool'!

I have one of them too... but I only use it on my wood-burner. I only have electric in the house so I am pretty sure that on the cooker, it would be less efficient than an electric kettle.

I have a whistle kettle too, used on the boiler when it's lit or on the ceramic hob when not.

I had an eco-kettle when I first moved up here but I'm afraid that like all my previous electric kettles it had a very short life span.

It's not just the amount of energy they use to boil the water that bothers me but even the eco version seems only to be built to last a short time - I don't treat them badly or let them boil dry, they just seem to die after a relatively short period of time.

My whistle kettle wasn't cheap, about £30, but has a long guarantee.

I like the fact that the first kettle only reaches 85 degrees, as it uses a lot of energy to reach boiling (and I am always standing by to switch off manually) but I understand there is a new kettle on the market which acts like a thermos - sounds good to me!

85 degrees will not make a good cuppa, BELIEVE me. mione has a "stay warm" setting which reaches 85 degrees and the tea made form it sucks.

I agree about the temperature for tea making - it really does have to be on the point of boil to make a great cuppa.

On the other hand those two look great, I wouldn't know which to choose either.

When we are in France or Spain I just use a very tiny Turkish coffee pan to boil up enough for two cups, it takes seconds on our (calor) gas hob. Only because kettles are not particularly common there and it started as a matter of necessity though.

No, you need boiling water for tea but 85oC is the optimum temperature for coffee making (if you use boiling water you scald the coffe and loose some of the flavour), and I dare say ideal for herbal teas, hot chocolate and noodles too.
