HOW DO I KEEP MY COMPOST BIN FROM BLOWING AWAY ??

Post: # 150293Post KK21 »

I recently bought a compost bin and now want to stick it in the back garden

The garden is ready for it and a bare patch of soil awaits

However, it's one of those plastic bin types and very lightweight

How do I hold it down ?

When the council delivered it I was at work; when I came home it had blown into my neighbours garden ...... and there was hardly any wind

Any tips would be welcome

Also

can I put seaweed in the bin, straight from the North Sea, or should that be rinsed first, to remaove salt

thanks !

HAPPY EASTER !!

Hi KK21

I also have a lightweight bin and I hold mine down by putting big stones and brickes round the edge of it. Sort of leaning them up against the side of the bin and wedgeg against the ground.

I have this problem too! We got three of the dalek-type ones, half-filled one of them and one blustery day last autumn - for that read 80mph  - we found the bin half way across the garden and we've never seen the contents again!

My neighbour suggested putting a sort of lasso round it then staking it to the ground, which sounds hopeful, but I'm also planning on fencing round it to protect it from the winds - and hope they stay upright

There's a lip on the bottom of mine which makes me think I could do something with 4 tent pegs if I needed to. However, mine are in a very sheltered spot and full up, so I haven't had that problem yet.

yup, get the foot long tent pegs from your local hardware store, then either heat em up and melt holes through the bottom, or drill it first.
so long as you are not on sand, they should hold it down

I do this plus put a large stone on top of the lid. I've unfortunately lost bits of bins to the wind in the past. So far so good with the extra stones.

Thanks for all your advice

My compost bin is up and running.

I found some large stones around the garden, so have used these to hold the bin down.

I put a few rows (short) of bricks on top of the soil and covered these with twigs, which will produce an air gap at the bottom (I got this tip on another web site)

My first pile of cuttings etc from yesterday's garden and the first load of vegetable peelings went in next, nicely watered and the lid is on.

That's a good start .... now to the sea front for some seaweed

Regards !
