Earth Hour 2009
Make Earth Hour Happen
It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?
The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour - sending a powerful national and global message that it is possible to take action on global warming.
This massive collective effort reduced Sydney's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.
With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice.
All households, communities and business around the world are being invited to turn their lights off for one hour at 8.30pm on March 28 2009 as Earth Hour goes global.
Towns and cities around the world will be taking a stand on the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, and millions of people will unite to turn the tide on global warming.
Pledge to turn out your lights for one hour and it’s as simple as that.

Thank you for the reminder! I did this last year (and burnt a small hole in my tablecloth with a tealight ) and will definitely do it again. I'll try and spread the word.

Re: Earth Hour 2009
We did this last year - it was great fun, we turned off the lights all evening, cooked fajita's on a small camping stove by candlelight
(beeswax candles of course.... If we're all burning petrolleum based candles and pumping out even more C02 the effect would be even worse - kind of misses the point!!!)
Then we had a good cuddle and chat by candlelight on the sofa.
Will be doing the same this year.

Re: Earth Hour 2009
Nice video!
As a side note, I don't know if other people do this too but last year I turned off everything electrical during Earth Hour (not just the lights). I went round and unplugged and switched off absolutely everything. I think the only thing I left was the fridge. There was actually quite a few useless things plugged in so it was a good reminder to me...
No candles anywhere near the table at all this time I think!Shirley wrote:Try not to burn the tablecloth this time
