I'm currently investigating gravel boards (usually used for the bottom of fences) - they're 19mm x 150mm x 2440mm so I reckon 3 would get you a raised bed 4' across and 8' wide. In Wickes they're something like £1.74 a metre. Only snag is those are 'treated' and I don't know what with. Need to try Jewsons to see if they have them cheaper.
