I so nearly gave it away!

Post: # 141077Post snapdragon »

A week ago I was going to freecycle a roll of used bubblewrap which came wrapped about grandbaby's christmas present, am so glad I didn't! I've just double-sided taped it to the front door windows, the 'light' above the door and the living room window - those being the windows/doors not yet double glazed (I will when I've saved up) it looks from the outside like a net curtain and it don't half keep the cold and drafty out :flower: - hadn't realised how much draft was coming through the old door windows until I stuck it all up - the wind is pushing it so it looks like a half a big bubble. Mind you the door is as old as the house so 105 years you'd expect a bit of wibble I guess.

Much more cosy now :sunny:

Good idea. I used to live in a maisonnette that was freezing. It had GCH but the radiators never got more than luke warm even turned up full. Being a maisonnette, the living room was on the same level as bedrooms would be in a normal house, so was quite exposed - 3 of the walls were to the outside, West, North and East sides. Across the road were bungalows, so no protection from icy winds there. The windows had double glazing frames, but there was only one sheet of glass in any of them. It was chuffing freezing. As soon as the weather started to turn cooler, I went around with cling film and tape to do a DIY double glazing job. Even a thin film like that was a help and billowed out, just like you said. We had french window doors in the east-facing wall (don't know why, we had no balcony, just a railing to stop us falling off). They were very old, the wood was rotten and the doors didn't meet in the middle. They all got taped up too. I always had blankets around my shoulders and kept moving about as much as I could. Ooh! It's making me shiver to remember it.

Here's a bit of sunshine and a hug to warm you up :sunny: :hugish:

OOOooooo... Snapdragon - don't ever give bubblewrap away... it's like the holy grail in our house - SO many uses... as you've found out

Well done for such a good idea though - we did a DIY with plastic film, thin wooden batons & sticky velcro strips that we stapled too.... at the time we lived right on the seafront at Blackpool, 2 floors up - NO shelter from anywhere when the wind howled.... interesting times!
In the summer, we just lifted off the frames & popped them under the bed for the next winter.... but we moved inland to a snug & warm flat so were safe!
This year however, on a frosty morning, I draw funny little pictures in the ice on the lounge windows... inside
It's ok though - we're living in the back room with Stanley - I know where I'm better off & anyway I didn't want to watch the big telly this winter....

Maybe a 101 uses for bubble wrap thread is in order... if it doesn't already exist.......
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

JulieSherris - glad to hear that Stan is keeping you toasty.

We have made several sets of internal double glazing from cling film and bubblewrap in various houses over the years.

We used to have a council flat that had huge metal windows, and a door onto a little balcony - and in the winter they would be a frozen shut - very very very cold. So we 'double' glazed them with bubble wrap and dowling rail frames.

Now we just wedge some of that alu coated bubble wrap insulation material up against the windows and shut the shutters until Spring!
