Oh Mandy - poor you. I hope it all thaws out soon with no damage.

It's been cold here but, so far, the heating has been behaving itself. It's snowed so the pavements are like skating rinks. I made the mistake of cycling to work on Monday. Big mistake, it was really rather scary although I made it both ways in one piece. Today I pretty much skated all the way to work which wasn't much fun either but most of it had gone by this evening.

We went out for lunch at work and the restaurant was freezing - we all sat there with our coats on

The chickens aren't very impressed. You should have heard them scolding me this morning - sorry girls but it really isn't my fault.

we've had to thaw the water coing into the hosue each morning for the past few days

Ann - we are not used to sub zero here so pipes etc are not postiion to avoid freezing. hence when we do get a cold snap, it causes big problems.

here in Devon it got down to -12 in parts - which is by no means a record but definitately unusual.
Last year we only had a handful of frosts and they were all gone by 10, this week it stayed frozen all day, and i had to take hot wwater out to the sheep water trough. - and bring our broody hen indoors.. and now its a bit wiffy .....

We recorded -15.2c last night, and are having our third day where the temperatures have dropped to the minus teens during the night, and not gone above freezing during the day, yesterday the warmest ( ) temperature we recorded was -3.8c, at about 2 pm in the afternoon, in the sun.

My buried water butts - all 5 of them full at 500litres have frozen solid, and this morning the front door was frozen to the jamb. My daughter was happy as she thought she would not be able to get outside to catch the school bus!

The ground is absolutely rock hard, and the poor chickens and ducks, are all trying to keep one foot of the ground all the time, their running stream pond is also frozen solid.

And we have at least another week of not hitting 0c to look forward to - heap the fires with wood, and finish off all those winter projects - fantastic - I love this time of year.

Sorry, still fairly mild, comparatively and drizzling - we're up to double figures tomorrow apparently

Yep, so are we apparently.
Last night it bottomed out at +6c and it's now 8.6 and mainly overcast.

We are the same Red, our main water supply is from a mountain spring which travels through about 3/4 mile of alkathene pipe just laying on the surface.
All our other pipes are unlagged external pipes too, and when we moved here the cold water tank was sitting on the flat garage roof ... it did have a lid on it though.

I've just been out in some lovely sunshine to pull up a few more onions. I took the spade in case the ground was a bit hard, but no, it's soft and moist and they pulled up by hand with no problem.

Sorry to gloat - when the weather's bad here it's horrid, so I'm enjoying getting the best of it for a while!

I bent my best gardening fork this week - in a vain attempt to dig up some leeks. :( Should have left them alone.

Much warmer today in the middle of Brittany though - must be above freezing as the water in the birdbath has melted without me needing to bung a kettle full of boiling water on it.

Sun is shining now but I think we're in for another cold night. There was a bit of cloud about last night which kept the temperature up a bit. I'll be stoking up the woodburner again!

Kathleen,

Try to get hold of a kids' paddling pool & just sit in it! That's how I spent most of my Summer pregnacy. There are several photos of me sat in the pool, sucking ice lollies! Not the most flattering pics ever taken, lol

I sat in the most internal room in our solid stone ground floor flat.... eating copious amounts of icecream and raspberries and salads.... I was VERY big and could barely move for the last month (might have been all that ice-cream...lol..) If I did venture out I took a bottle of frozen water in my hand bag.... sitting on a hot bus with my hands inside my hand bag, kept me very cool but I must have looked odd.

Best of Luck Kathleen

Good evening,

It's getting really cold here too .. much colder than we have known for the last 4 years in the cottage.

It went down to -6,2 celcius here .. the trouble is that it was inside the polytunel !

so it must have been closed to -8 I would bet.

nothing has thawed yet for the last 5 or 6 days ...

2 days ago I've put warmish water for the chickens and all in the morning (9ish), by 10 it was frozen already !

the ducks and geese can't swim on their pond so one decided to go broody in the shed ... and a hen in another one .. so they don't seem to mind .. to get colder they would have to join their mates in the freezer though !

oh and the sheep have their wool frozen every morning ... poor things !

Ah the joys of the good life out in the sticks of Galway ..

Camile
