How cold is it where you are?

Post: # 136831Post Millymollymandy »

It's currently minus 8.8C here and the cold pipe to kitchen and downstairs bathroom has finally succumbed and frozen. :( It's not the end of the world because we have 2 other bathrooms (!) though my husband 6'4" doesn't really fit into the other shower  and for washing up (can't use dishwasher!) I can get a bucket of cold water from the cellar. It's just a pain in the butt and I'm fed up with this freezing weather - in fact it's not the minus temps that are really the problem but when the wind starts it is the wind chill that is seriously evil! :angryfire:

I've coldest I've seen on the thermometer is -5.9 but the minimum temp clocked at -7.7 late last night.
There's a lot of condensation in our bathroom so the inside of the window was frozen! We're not using the central heating, rather moving the gas fire around the house where ever we go!

Hope your bathroom pipes thaw soon MMM!

Yesterday it was -7.5 at about 10am, I had a horrible time trying to sort the ducks and chickens water out, as it kept freezing (even with the tennis ball floating in it)

This morning was only -3, and drizzling, so actually a lot better. The ground still feels like concrete underfoot though!

I don't take temperature readings, so I can't give you figures. What I can say, though, is that yesterday was very cold. Bird baths, buckets, pond, everything solid ice. I wanted to do some digging at the allotment, so I went mid-afternoon thinking it might have thawed a bit by then. It hadn't and the ground was rock solid, so I ended up just going home again. It wasn't a complete waste of time, though. I moved a plank of wood from one end of the allotment to the other

Today's not so bad. Only a sliver of thin ice on the buckets, no frost on the ground, no-one defrosting their car windows or anything. It's trying to drizzle, so not nice for people working outside.

Yesterday and today the minimum here was +3.5c
Still cold though with a slight ground frost.

Here in the Dordogne we still have a thick covering of snow from yesterday. Our little Spanish cat, who has never seen ice and snow before, was snorting at the snow when she went out, trying to blow herself a path. She had to give up and come back indoors to warm up after ten minutes. The roads are OK once we can get onto the main ones; the roads in towns and villages and also little lanes are lethal. We had been planning a shopping trip into northern Spain this week but I think it might be less than sensible!

Our outside temperature at the moment is -5C and we have loads of unusual birds coming to the birdtable - they are obviously struggling to find something to eat out there.

Well probaby just unusual for us but we've had a hawfinch, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker and goldfinch this morning. Normally we just get blue tits, great tits, a robin, chaffinches and dunnocks with the occasional thrush and blackbird coming to see if there is anything tasty around.

Oooo! I'm speechless! :silent:

My wash line was still hanging icicles yesterday at 3pm - and it had the sun on it all day too :angryfire:
So the indoor airer is out again.

When hubby came home last night at 7pm, it was reading -4.5, so goodness knows what it got to during the night.
Looking out across the fields, it looks like a thick cover of snow, but no, it's just frost.
I can't even go up the hayshed to saw my tree trunks, because they're frozen! Still, all the sucky mud spots around the gardens are now rock solid, so I can walk anywhere!!

Indoors, the temperature in the back room where our Stanley lives, is a comfy 21 degrees - but the lounge is reading 10.2 :pale:
I just keep thinking... double glazing this year, double glazing this year, double glazing this year,
Plus new radiators & proper loft insulation!
Over the next few days we're holing up in the back room & the lounge will stay cold & unloved for a while :(
A house day today, methinks.

Chin up folks, it can't last forever!
Julie
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

Saw my first Brambling this morning which usually signifies cold weather. I've been feeding the birds with all the left over Xmas stuff we didn't get through and as I've got so many blue tits here they've been having a wonderful time eating home made Xmas pudding (a disaster), left over goats cheese and camembert and a salmon and dill savoury cake. There's still another Xmas pud for them and half a galette des rois from a shop which was disgusting.

Oh I forgot to mention that both hot and cold water is frozen in the top floor shower room, so we're left with only a tiny bathroom which still works, so hubby will be having his first bath in umpteen years tomorrow!
