The Daily Rant... I Mean Blog to Preserve My Sanity....

Post: # 135323Post JulieSherris »

OK, so you really don't need to read this thread, but I shall be using this over the next week to sound off about the MIL.
It helps me to get things off my chest - the woman drives me absolutely insane, but the problem is that she's 88, has no brothers or sisters, was married to an only child & adopted one little boy... so we're her only family.
Now, I can be a real and complete and utter bitch at times, but I also know that in her way, she loves both of us very much and she's not ALL bad, it's just that as each year goes by, she gets a little more cantakerous each time.

So, yesterday I drove to collect her from dublin airport - I'd ordered her wheelchair service from the plane as the walk at dublin is horrendous. I met the wheelchair man who was a nice chap & then braced myself......
'Eeeeeeeee! Just look at you! I would never have recognised you! Oh, you clever, clever girl!'..... all screeched in her best soprano voice.....
For those of you that don't know, I had a gastric bypass in March & so far, I've lost 7 1/2 stones..... yes, I look different, but I'm still a bit touchy about it & I also don't do compliments very well..... especially in a packed airport, being stared at by strangers who are wondering exactly WHY I'm so clever (I'm NOT clever, if I was, I woudn't have put the weight on in the first place)

Anyways, on the journey home, I got the story about how she dressed down a waiter in London last month, for daring to add a gratuity to the bill in a restaurant - 'it wasn't printed on the menu, so it wasn't legal to add it', she says....
And how she paid £49 a night in a Kensington hotel & they only allowed her to have a continental breakfast... 'and it's obvious that I'm NOT continental'..... I explained that especially in London, you get what you pay for - £49 was a VERY budget price.... went down like a lead balloon.....

After a 3 hour drive, with a stop at a fast food place  'why do YOU have to clear the table, don't they do that, it must be their job'.....
We got home & hubby came out to help get her in.... guided tour around the house - it looks a LOT better at night, she's yet to see in daylight....
In the kitchen... 'are you going to change the colour? It's not really a kitchen colour, is it. I'm surprised you've not painted, Andrew'.... Hmm. my kitchen is light green walls with dark green cupboard doors - no, I don't like it either, but she knows we've been here 3 months & have been outside for most of that time....
In 'her' room... 'Oh, have I to use Leah's room? I thought you had two spare rooms'...
Yep, and I'm using the 3rd bedroom as a store room, because we're tight on cupboard space. And I'm really going to have a separate room to use just for when she visits twice a year, huh?

Then we showed her how we keep in touch with different folks thru the web - my eldest had her webcam on, as did another friend - she still doesn't really get it...... but I kept our webcam on her, so the daughter could share my pain!!

Well, the week starts here, folks!
Don't think you have to reply, I will use this one thread throughout the week for the MIL musings.... and sanity will be preserved - hopefully!!

Wahay!! It's Christmas Eve - I am off to play with the turkey & ham & make fruit cake & cook some mince pies & stuff - have a good day all!!

I dare say I'll post again in a few minutes... I mean, hours

Oh Julie - I empathise totally. I've just collected my mother from Manchester (she stayed with my daughter for a few weeks) and she's an absolute nightmare!

She's started acting like a guest again, and referring to the spare bedroom in Manc as "in my bedroom....".

She's taken to sitting, waiting to be fed and watered. I picked up a virus in Manc so I could have done with someone making me a drink - no chance. And they all wait for me to decide what's for dinner - and then to cook it.

Sorry honey - this thread may just be the tonic many of us need at this time of year - a place to vent.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking it.

Big hugs for you Julie! I know it sounds like it's going to be hard but do try to relax and enjoy Christmas and ignore any silly comments MIL makes she's just set in her ways (as I would be at 88 I think) and she probably doesn't mean them in the way you think she does... if you see what I mean!

Anyway... Christmas always zooms by so as someone above said, it will soon be next week :sunny:

rant away

we had my OHs grandma (in her 90s) one christmas. I only stayed sane by sending daily emails to SIL (who we did it for so she could have time without grandma) along the style of big brother. nope i cant stand BB - so added to the irony

"day three in the wicked grandma house. Grandma uses a new book given to me as a gift as something to mop up spilt tea...have taken to drinking by 11 am...."

you will get through this.....

Oh goodness - you lot are just SO lovely!

Maggie, you hijack away, honey - you're more of a saint than I am - you have yours actually living with you.... :pale:

Tony, SPS, Red & Rose - thank you all - your comments actually help - it's nice knowing there is a refuge & sanctuary here.

Today, I took her out for the tour of the gardens... I had to buy her some of those welly shoes & off we went... took us just a little over 2 hours to go right round.... and she likes it!
Oh, apart from the derelict cottage... and the stone outbuilding ruins.... and the banks between the different areas... and the brambles - which are actually blackberries ('oh, but you only eat the blackberries from the shops don't you, else you don't know WHAT has been on them'.....) Oh, and she's not too keen on the front wall now hubby has cleared the beech hedging away.... 'the wall looks so dirty'.... and she doesn't like the fact that the hayshed is sheeted with corrugated metal, 'can't you paint that?'.... and also that we had to dodge dog poo, cos I haven't done a poo hunt in 2 days... 'can't you train them to go only in their little paddock?'.... Yeah, right - try training a basset to do anything!
But, as I said, apart from that, she likes the garden...... she loved the 15 foot holly trees, still bearing berries.... 'did you put that in?'.... Oh yeah, I carried a 15 ft Holly tree all by myself...

And then we had the convos about different friends..... you know, 'well she went to her neighbour, she's in a detached property of course'..... and 'she gets a new car each year even at her age you know. Why can't YOU get a new car each year, Andrew?'..... Umm because our 12 yr old Saab is still running like a dream & it only cost us £400 3 yrs ago.....

But she's now having a nap on the sofa & waiting while I cook tea... while she's not looking, I might go find some arsenic.... just kidding, here's to a long night methinks!

Love to you all - hope you're not working yourselves too hard on tomorrows preparations - I might start drinking again tonight actually - I'm trying mulled wine, home made, so wish me luck, hic! :drunken:

Ok..... so we had dinner & all was well.....

Shortly after, MIL took a bit of a turn....... had the right shakes & nearly passed out.... she vomited a little later & I started to panic - after my arsenic comments before, how could I persuade you all that I hadn't actually done anything to her?
Anyways, I called the emergency doc & talked to the nurse.... half hour goes past & her hands start to turn blue... she had a heart bypass a few years back & is diabetic - also suffers from polymyalgia.... although hubby & I decided long ago that she actually copes very well, but enjoys rattling off her ailments & medications.... So I called the doc back & out he came - what a lovely guy!

Doc gave her 2 injections, left a penicillin course & some suppositories (just in case) & thank fully, she's now asleep......

Apparently, she went along to her own doc on friday, because she was poorly - never told us though & he advised she didn't travel
Well, she ignored him, bought some robitussin & imodium to mix with her insulin, paracetamol, steroids & heart meds.....

SO, here's to another day tomorrow - I'm gonna cook Edna the Turkey now, & finally, although it's after midnight, I'm going to have a glass of mulled wine... or 2... or 3.....

Love you all - Merry Ishmas, All!! :santa:

PBF - you know when you feel ... like so crap that you just start to laugh? Well, that's me!
When she said she was going to pass out, I just kept thinking, oh god, don't peg it now, everyone will think I've done it!!

So... now I'm just smiling serenely & hoping that the rest of the week goes ok...
fingers crossed!

Happy Christmas to you all. I feel sick as a dog. Fun here NOT with mum and me being ill. My mum, brother and I always argue when we're together but I'm not going to rant and rave about them because my brother has been STALKING me reading this forum sometimes !!! which amazed me so I said "but you're the most UNselfsufficient person in the universe  " and he just said he had looked in occasionally when he was bored. It was my thread about the caterpillars on the kale and he kept making jokes about caterpillars and I said 'did I tell you in an email or something' feeling very puzzled, when he admitted he had read it all here! (so if you are reading this M - bog off  )

Excuse the crap grammar as I feel very fuzzy.

Julie - I'm waving right at you over the water from Troon!
Merry Christmas - you've given me the humour to go and face mine!
