Hey hey, I won the war!!

Post: # 132136Post JulieSherris »

Well, ok not exactly a war - but I had a minor victory yesterday in B & Q!!

Now, B & Q is relatively new in Ireland - but for us coming from the UK, it's one place that I know I can go to get most things cheaper than the local places - depending on what it is & how much we need to buy, it's sometimes the only affordable option.

So as we now have to enclose our gardens & we have to do it as cheap as we can, I looked at getting some chicken wire, ground stakes & battening.... I checked the B & Q UK prices (there's no irish prices for the B & Q site) and seeing as I was looking at about 20 rolls of wire, I would have made a huge saving against our local shop.... so off I went on the 50 mile round trip.....

UK B & Q price per roll... £10.98..... Irish B & Q price.... E33.72!!!!!!
Doing the pound/euro conversion, it should have been about 14 euros
So by my calculations, that was a difference of about £20 per roll - 20 rolls - £400 dearer - :pale: I felt VERY wobbly, I can tell you!!

So I went & found 2 guys who were sorting out their chrimbo tree displays & asked where the nearest northern ireland store was.... I told them about the UK price & how much I wanted to buy.....

15 minutes later & after they checked the website & then made a telephone call to 'the powers that be' & I was allowed to buy 20 rolls at 14 euros a roll - wahay!!

So I've proved that even against a huge corporation like B & Q, sometimes the little people CAN do battle & win!!
I'm dead chuffed - now if only I can secure the garden as easy....

Well done Julie, I'm proud of you :salute:

Not sure I agree with you about B&Q being cheapest though.
Within 40 miles from here there are B&Q, Homebase, Woodies and 4Homes Superstore, but I'm sure that most building materials are cheaper in the Home-value hardware franchised builders yard 20 minutes up the road. Plus they deliver for free and employ people who know what their talking about.

Hi Tony - I checked the local Home value - although we live quite a way away, so delivery is 20 euros.... they didn't have the lightweight mesh..... neither did Homebase at Longford.... Woodies was E26 a roll, our local place only do the heavyweight galvanised wire & it too, worked out quite dear

So.... B & Q it was - although I used our local Connacht Co-op for the bits & bobs & our local wood yard for the battening & stakes.

Shopping in Ireland has become quite a learning curve!
I found out from the locals where to go for my Stanley spares, hubby was in the car & I pulled into someone's driveway.... walked up to the back door & went to go in... with hubby hissing at me in a panic, he thought I was breaking & entering.... then he relaxed when he saw that the back of the house had been kitted out as a Range showroom!

Right..... I am off to do battle with the hawthorn hedging.... anyone got any good ideas for removing splinters? I have about 7 from yesterday - but have just bought new gloves - wish me luck!

Well done Julie
Result indeed

Shame your hawthorns haven't been 'laid' - you could have had a stockproof hedge instead of having to put up the fencing
