A new Aussie to the site

Post: # 129019Post Thisbe »

Hi Everyone! I am new to the site, stumbled across it when I was doing search for other information. It’s nice to see such a big international community interested in self sufficiency. I am only new to all this – it is something I’ve always been interested in but have only just started to set up for it. I am a 29 year old Western Australian and live with my husband in a lovely valley that gets over 1m of rain a year (that’s quite a lot for Australia!). We have 18 acres of land, of which about 10 acres is open horse pastures which we have planted about 2000 trees from all around the world. We would like to open it up as an arboretum one day (…in about 10 years or so!). The rest of the property is re-growth bushland. We have many different types of fruit and nut trees, most of them quite young, and we’re in the process of setting up our vegetable patch. We would like to eventually get some chickens too but need to wait until we build a shed to attach the coup. We have no other animals but may consider having some in a couple of years as it’s a bit hard juggling the property and working full time at the moment without animals! My main interests are in learning about organic vegetable gardening, seed collecting and propagation and food preserving. I would also like to learn more about the old ways of doing things - before electricity and gadgets. I am looking forward to the day when most of the food we eat is grown from our own gardens. I hope I didn’t write too much! I look forward to getting to know some of the other members and sharing ideas and plans :thumbright:

I forgot to mention that we don’t have the internet at home. We would like to get it eventually, my Husband will be opening a business from home and we will need it then, however that’s not for a while.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Hi kiwirach! Nice time of year to come to OZ for a visit. Good luck finding a place...there are a lot of great areas with lots of potential - you just have to find where it feels like 'home' :D

Hi Thisbe,

Welcome to the site. You sound like you're having great fun (and a lot of hard work) over there in Western Australia.

Hello and welcome! You must be up in the north of the state in the tropical bit to get that kind of rainfall, surely? I'd LOVE to have that much rainfall - you lucky thing!
