Posting photos
The photo competition is gradually sinking under a welter of posts about resizing and posting pics which I think rather spoils it. Please can we stop posting this stuff on there?
I have an easy solution to this problem which I'd like to recommend.
1. Go to the IrfanView site and download IrfanView. It's a great, free photo utility.
2. Whatever kind of photo you have, open it in IrfanView and select Image > Resize/Resample
3. Check "Preserve aspect ratio" and enter 72.
4. Check "Set new size" and enter 700 in Width. Make sure pixels is selected.
5. Click OK.
6. Select File > Save or Save As.
That's it. The application will resize your photo for you nicely. You may want to try Image > Sharpen for a really crisp look.
Then you can upload it to your favourite hosting service. It pays to look at the link options offered by the hosting service carefully as they're often confusing.
700 pixels is the maximum width allowed by the forum, and 72 pixels is the biggest resolution of Web photos.

Re: Posting photos
I don't pretend to understand this issue fully, I merely suggested something that definitely works...
My pics look the same on my desktop as they do uploaded to this forum.
In 10 years, I haven't found anything that works as well as IrfanView for handling photos (and other media), including Photoshop.

Re: Posting photos
May I make a suggestion - it would be best for people who are new to the forum to know that they do not need to host a photo on the web - they can upload direct from their PCs with the board that we have now. It makes it much easier for people to post photos.

Re: Posting photos
I didn't know you can do it direct onto the site. I faff about with photobucket etc. I'll have to check out how to do that, it sounds much easier...

Re: Posting photos
Graye, I didn't notice it either, but when you do a new post, there's an upload attachment section at the bottom.
It's good to be able to upload directly, but the Attachment frame in the post is so ugly, I think I'd rather use an external service. Picky, I know.
