Buying fabric?

Post: # 112954Post becks77 »

Hi All,
How do you all get hold of fabric to use for dressmaking?
Is there a supplier of organic fabric on the net I just haven't found yet?
Or do you re work old items?

A combination really of reworking old stuff I already have, buying hideous old dresses in charity shops, finding stuff on Freecycle/Realcycle, getting the ocassional bit of vintage stuff from Ebay, buying from markets or asian fabric shops. I obviously can't guarantee any of this is organic/fair trade etc but I hardly ever buy new clothes now and if I do then they are organic/fair trade.

I don't tend to go for organic fabric...i admit it...

I buy at rag markets/haberdashery stalls etc. I very very rarely buy from a haberdashery shop because they are way out of my price range. The amount i would pay for the fabric would buy me the item of clothing ready made in a lot of cases.

Do you have an Aberkahn nearby?

They sell fabric by weight rather than length and can work out really cheap. I made curtains (lined) for big french windows and front windows for about £20. The fabrics are all in big bins sorted by type - striped, linen, fleecy etc. So you need your tape measure, or nose to fingertips.

I know there are a few branches but the one's Iknow are in Manchester, Chester and north Wales. Don't know if they've travelled south yet.
