Rain and more rain

Post: # 119682Post old tree man »

Is it me or have i missed summer, up here in the north we seem to have had rain one day then overcast another then rain, half a day of sun then cloud then rain, i'm sure if you add all the sunny days together we must of had about 10 full days of clear sun, even now as i type this it is p........ing down again.
You can certainly understand how people suffer from weather depression i'm sick to the back teeth of it myself, is this the future of british weather/ global warmAll the years of working with nature in the forestry i have noticed the vast changes in when the season react, i have watched chestnut tree start to drop there leaves in july/august at least one month earlier than 20yrs ago, daffodils budding earlier cherries flowering very early then catching a snap frost and being nable to fruit which then restricts birds foraging for berries,
quite a worring cenario.

I heard on Farming Today this morning how badly many farmers in Britain are affected - we missed the worst of it up here. Not looking good at all for the crops. :(

Generally we have been fairly lucky with lots of rain during the night then sun (or least very warm but cloudy) during the day. The tomatoes have loved it, and I've generally been able to leave them alone. Saying that I've just woken up to torrential rain. But my melon plant has just about survived outside so it can't be that cold.

Hi,Old Tree Man, we live on the edge of Thetford Forest & have noticed the changes. Last years wet weather was blamed on the "Jet Stream" being too far South. So far, this year,....no explanation. Make your own mind up.Is it Global Warming, or Climate Change........answers,please,on a postcard,to this address!!
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

Hi we too are on the edge of Thetford Forest and we have had some awful days but we have had good days too( well dry at least) with rain coming at night, but my poor friends in Cornwall and Somerset have had constant rain for 2 months so much for the English Riviera!
I just hope the winter will be mild as I'm sure everyone else is with the cost of heating......

Hi Russ, I've noticed the horsechest nuts as well, but I thought that'd be due to dry. However I think I heard an article on the radio about some sort of disease that Horsechest nuts are getting , It's apparently wiping out large numbers, they weep black goo or something!. Don't know if you've heard about that?. First signs are brown leaves.
It's not easy being Cheezy
So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

Hi cheezy
no i had'nt heard of the chestnut disease thats a worring thing in its self ,it takes me back years when we cut thousands of Elm trees down because of disease, that was heartbreaking i hope that dose'nt happen again.
The chestnuts that i have noticed do come back regulaly each year they just seem to break leaf early then drop very early.

Didn't quite work out that way! The last two days - more rain than ever; today reasonably dry - thank goodness, as we were working with the sheep all day, and handling wet sheep is not much fun... But it's drizzling again now.

Going back to the Horse Chestnut disease, apparently it is extremely serious.......on the scale of Dutch Elm desease.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

I think that this year i am going to collect conkers and bring on a few trees, my allotment is big enough to have a small arboricultural section, mabey we all could raise a few and then plant them out in a few years its not hard work and we would be doing somthing positive for the enviroment.
