New Garden bed after stump removal

Post: # 119099Post yugogypsy »

Hello All

Rick dug a huge old red cedar stump out of the back yard and has turned it into a nice round flower bed for me (I'll probably use it for lettuce)

But heres a picture of the stump

 Lois

Oh goodness me.

That'll be a lot of lettuce you can plant on that.

Wow, that took a bit of digging, how long did it take him?
I've done a few but never one that big

OMG Lois that is one almighty stump!

My husband and brother have dug out a few stumps by hand but they are miniscule in comparison!

Can you send Rick to me for a few days please?

If I could raise the plane fare you know I would, he's a good worker. Tomorrow I will post a picture of the completed garden bed waiting for plants.

Its either herbs or salad greens, probably herbs as it gets a lot of sun, and I found a plan tonight for a circular herb garden on the 'Net.

Hows the gardening over your way?, we had an almighty failure with bush beans this year, Spring was too cold for too long and wet.

I got a new chook tonight, a Cochin, I just adore them, she is black and white with bronze in her neck feathers, makes her head look like a hawks-and she's smart, she has an intelligent eye, don't think I'll have any trouble with her.

I am going to replace most of my chooks, they are 3 yrs old, still molting since May and not laying much. And I don't like Rhode Islands anyway, give me a flock of mixed breeds and bigger bantams.

Hope all is well with you

Take Care
 Lois

Hi Lois, my garden is growing well (ish) but it has been a really windy year and I've got so many things staked in the veg patch against the wind - even my sweetcorn was falling over and just about everything I've planted, beans, kale, you name it, I've had to put little stakes in to tie them into. Then I had to go all around loosening the string when the plants grew! It's also a bad year for plums, peaches and pears but an amazing bumper harvest of apples - I have to keep removing apples from my trees because the branches are in danger of snapping off under the weight of the fruit!

We also have a problem this year with wasps and whitefly are everywhere in my veg patch and particularly seem to like my leeks and cucumbers.

I have some new flower beds this year but some plants have died whilst others have done amazingly well. Each year brings something different, some good, some bad, but it's all interesting and fun and what would I do without it all!
