Probably being really stupid, but...
...on the "old" forum there was a setting that seemed to automatically mark all unread posts as read when one logged off and flagged up new posts made since the last time one logged on when one returned once more.
I found this really useful for my style of browsing (ie a few seconds here and there) 'cos I could see changes very easily. But this functionality seems to have disappeared in the new format and - to be honest - I'm using the forum less (OK, some people might think that's a good thing) as a result.
Now, I know that on each board there is the option to make the posts as read, but no where that I can see is it possible from the board index.
Am I just being thick?

Re: Probably being really stupid, but...
Every time I log in I click the 'View New Posts' link at the top right of the board. This means I only get what's new since I last logged in. This works for me so that I on't have to go through all of the posts to find what I haven't read already.
Is this what you mean?

Ah - but it doesn't work that well!!!! I went through absolutely everything, logged out and logged back in - and Riff-Raffs last post wasn't on the new list, even though I hadn't seen it. So, it looks like if a post comes in while you're reading the "latest posts" list, then you ain't going to see it unless you do the full site examination thing.
Well - modern technology!!!!.

Press the "view new posts" thingy just before you log out and it picks up any that have arrived whilst you were purusing.

What - you mean there are conditions on this new-fangled stuff? I've got to know how to work it? You know, I remember the early seventies when stuff worked despite ableary-eyed and mentally confused operators. Where's that technology gone?

Not to mention TVs with proper buttons and volume knobs. Remember them? Now, how is a remote control that is permantly disappearing or running out of batteries an improvement over that?MKG wrote:What - you mean there are conditions on this new-fangled stuff? We cannot make the DVD player work without the remote. Actually, I can't make it work with it, but that is beside the point.

Dear oh dear, you use View new posts in the same way as Posts since last visit (or whatever it was called).
After I've read a post I go back to the View new posts and have a look through what interests me to read.
Now, you can go back to the forum index and press new posts again and see what's coming in new as you are browsing, or - GET THIS!!!- you can refresh your screen and it will do it for you!!!

MKG - I'm quite sure you know miles more than me about computers! But I'm a bit of a forum junkie.
