Good for you!

My OH wants to build one - he's bought a heap of books! Do you have any photos of what you've done so far?

sorry, i can't seem to see the plans for the canoe, :? where am i going wrong?

i have built a couple of "cots" in my time . . . . a cot is a traditional timber boat used in this part of Ireland for salmon-fishing. i used to fish the Snap-net for salmon back when it was still legal. i started out helping out an older fisherman build a couple of cots and picked it up from there. i do have pictures of the first one i built myself, poor quality pictures mind, but i will put them up if someone explains to me how i do it . . . .

there is great satisfaction in whiling away the day in a traditional boat that you built with your own hands
the man that made time . . . . he made plenty of it

No doubt there are several ways to put pictures up but this is how I did it and I find it very straightforward:

Firstly I registered/loaded Picasa2 onto my computer. Completely free and no problem. After loading all the pictures on my computer had been found and were now on Picasa2. Also when I load more pictures they get added.

To post pictures you need to size them correctly & I have given the resized ones their own file.

Go into Picasa2 & double click the photo you want to resize.

Click FILE

Click Export picture to folder

Select folder where you wish to store your photo.

Resize to 640 pixels.

Choose name for photo.

Choose image quality automatic.

Click OK

Go to post & click REPLY

Type heading etc

Click BROWSE at the botton of the screen.

Find your file with the picture in it.

Double click to select picture.

Double click on Img??? in the big box to add to post.

Click "ADD THE FILE"

Wait for it to load.

Click preview & if OK click Submit.

Much easier to do than to explain!

Any problems just ask. I look forward to seeing your cot.

I have fitted out a couple of boats having bought the hulls. One a 20 foot GRP and one 37 foot steel. I would like to build a Yorkshire Cobble or Double Ender but not sure if I have the skill or time and do not want to end up spending thousands on an unfinished project!

Hi all!

The canoe is currently on hold as my fiance and i need ALL our pennies as we are buying our first hose! it looks like a cnoe though! sitting in my parents garage... it needs fibreglass/varnishing work. The plans are really easy to follow. I would suggest that when making your boat that you have LOTS of sturdy things(crates/boxes) to prop the sides up/support the bottom. Also another pair of hands to hold bits and bobs(and put the kettle on) is a real big help!! i need to get the photos up- i am quite forgetful :?

I spoke to a boat building chap i met on the beach near my house lately regarding current price of epoxy resin... the canoe plans suggest coating the whole boat in epoxy- which requires 6 litres... this works out VERY expensive! He suggested doing a 1st coat of marine varnish diluted with white spirit after the fibre glass work to seal the joints. Once dry do further coats with undiluted marine varnish. He said that the white spirit would help the varnish really soak into the wood.

I can't wait to hear how other people get on with the building!!

I think that the fold up boat looks quite interesting!

Garrrrrr, Cap'n Tom
