Hi from Rosey in Yorkshire
Just wanted to say 'hello'. I have just joined Self Sufficient-ish having decided to find out how close I can get to being self-sufficient.
I took on an allotment last October and have just had my first mini-harvest - some new potatoes. I also have a small garden at home where I grow a little fruit and some herbs. I have grown a few vegetables at home in the past, but took on the allotment to allow the garden to be used more as a play area for my little girl.
I have a partner, two teenage children and a (terrible) two-year old. I try to get them as involved in the growing side of things as I can, but to be honest, the teenagers aren't very enthusiastic. My little girl likes sowing seeds and making mud castles.
I occasionally make my own herbal remedies when needed, have brewed wine and beer in the past (and would like to do it again in the near future), and have just taken up baking as a way of reducing my dependence on shop bought produce.
In my spare time I run my own internet business selling fair trade clothing, accessories, jewellery and items for the home, plus vegan, organic toiletries. So far, the majority of the profits have been pumped back into the business. The rest has been donated to local charities (Samaritans and RSPCA). I haven't yet taken any wages from the company, running it instead as a sort of hobby. It exists more because I believe in fair trade and cruelty-free principles rather than for me to become rich from it.
Edited to remove the link to the website because it doesn't exist any more. I found it was using up far too much of my time. Not only that, I discovered something about myself: I enjoy planning things and setting things up, but don't enjoy actually running them.

Hello Rosie - welcome to the ishers.
What a GREAT site and such good prices too.
Getting vegan toothpaste here is impossible so I get whoever's coming over to visit to bring a load with them (amongst other various items).
I might pick your brains about how you started your own shop etc etc.....if you don't mind.

Glad you like the site. Feel free to ask any questions, but to be honest, judging by my sales I might not be a good person to ask
