I'm sure Halfords have got into backing the cycle-to-work scheme, as we've had a few calls from them.

Also, check out some of the car sharing websites (shared wheels?). We have to pay for parking permits where I work, but if you share a car you get a premium parking space for less than half price....

That's the kind of bin we have! But bottles go through, too, and all sorts of other stuff.

yes they are, it's a scheme where you get a set amount to spend on a bike from Halfords which is sent to you in voucher form. your company then gets this money back by taking it from your wages at a set amount each month, but they do it BEFORE the tax is calculated so in effect you're not only getting a bike, you're getting a little tax relief too. Hubby got offered it but he can't exactly cycle to work; well, he sort of could I suppose but only if we buy him full Kevlar body armour for when he's got to cycle through Acton and Willesden at night or in early morning.

OH has been thinking of getting a bike (I am such a trend-setter :cooldude: ) His work dosen't yet run the bike-to-work thing so he was hoping to wait until they do.

However he is much keener (as we always are) to support smaller, better, more customer orientated companies - OH would loathe to have to buy a bike from halfords. There are many smaller stores that support the scheme, only problem is that halfords a nationwide and huge, so they are in the best position to support bigger employers :(

Am I allowed to plug Edinburgh Bicycle co-operative again

Mrs F - Your OH will just need to learn to cycle really fast :dave:

:D love the idea but on top of the terrible area problems, his commute by car is at least 1 hour each way. trains add an hour to his journey each way, add to that his 10 sometimes 12 hour shifts and we're getting into severely sleep-deprived man working in a public safety sector. it just aint gonna happen lol!!! at the moment he leaves the house at 5:30 to get to work in time for a 7am start (factoring in potential difficulties with traffic) he leaves at 6am f he's on an 8am start because the trafic is that bit worse the later you leave. he then works til 6pm (7 if he's doing team leader duties) and drives home, getting here anywhere between 7 and 8pm. his job involves physical work too and after a normal week commuting by car he's totally bushed. His shifts are 7 days or nights straight followed by 7 off. he seems to need that time to recover!!

Also he'd never get to see soph when he's on days so she'd go 7 days without seeing her daddy. I know this is the norm for some people but it's not for us.

We are, however, thinking of seeing if there's a loophole to allow him to use this scheme to get me a bike... but we're not too sure it's possible 'cos he's 5'8" and a man, and I'm 4'8.5" and a woman.... plus we can't apply again until april next year. I'll havr to stick to my company staff family subsidised bus tickets.
