Traceable shoes?
We've found compelling evidence that my neurotic ex-sister-in-law is preparing to take my nephew and run. The courts say that until the evaluations are finished, she still gets her visitation. My brother is talking with the lawyers about the evidence we've found, in the mean time we're preparing for the hunt. Does anyone know if its possible to get shoes or other clothing with a built-in GPS transmitter? Where?
If not, does anyone know where I could get a self-contained GPS small enough to be implanted in the sole off munchkin's shoe?

You must be able to get ones for animals - like a tag for a cat's collar. would be simple to attach it to something...
I don't know if you can get ones for kids (wrist bands etc)
Not sure what the legal implications would be
but if you had one put in a shoe or a jacket for safety reasons - in case LO goes missing or get's lost... there might be something on the market like that already

Cripes!
I know you can get tracker devices fitted to cars and laptop bags etc. I found this http://www.qinetiq.com/home/newsroom/ne ... y_GPS.html which might be of interest but I'm unsure of its size and practicality. Also, the price may be prohibitively expensive.
Good luck. My auntie's husband snatched their 4 month old baby and took him to the USA, where he remained for his entire childhood. That was 21 years ago but I still remember it all so clearly

A good article describing exactly what I'm looking for, but not where to find it. The company's website has a link for buying stock in the company, but not for buying the shoes.Thurston Garden wrote:http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/342/C11491/
I don't need stock, I need a way to keep my nephew safe. All the info I could find talks about stuff that is being introduced, but it appearantly hasn't hit the market yet because you can't BUY the bloody things!
Not angry at you, just angry in general.

It would appear that those sneakers aren't out on the market yet - but due this summer? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17063608/
Good luck. Sending you kind thoughts.

This was the kind of thing I was thinking of - made for dogs and you can track on your own computer.

There are similar things on ebay (I searched GPS tracker) but they are not very concealable. Perhaps sewn into his wee backpack or something similar - a favorite teddy bear? Something that he would not be likely to be without.

I've been thinking about this a whole lot and I think that would be far preferable to GPS sneakers. What if she went off & he was wearing something other than the sneakers? Inside a favourite toy/comforter would be the safest bet I reckon.Thurston Garden wrote:There are similar things on ebay (I searched GPS tracker) but they are not very concealable. The sneaker idea was based a lot on my knowledge of her behavior. She leaves his toys behind easily, but it took her a year to buy him new shoes long after he'd outgrown the old ones, and then it was only because the social worker assigned to their case kept nagging her about it.
She's OCD and a hoarder, she's not self-aware enough to recognize patterns that could be used against her.
I'll look into the backpack idea though, if Munchkin can be convinced that its better than a suitcase, he won't let her pack his stuff without it.

there are ways to track mobile phones, I can't remember but it was mentioned in one of the crappy magazines a few weeks ago. basically you sign up their mobile to it and track it via the web. get him an el cheapo mobile (smith's have one for £12.49 atm) and sign it up. nobody need ever know the number, it's a small enough phone to fit into a pocket and not be noticed. also, if she finds and switches it off then the tracker will alert you to that too.
Or there's my bro's mobile (siemens something, sorry I got no brain but it's £20 ish on virgin) which when you press a certain button 4 times, it sends sms texts to up to 4 people. when they ring back it connects immediately without the mobile owner having to press anything. I'm one of my bro's emergency contacts. this thing works with no credit on it too.
just a few thoughts.

My phone has a similar function, it's a Samsung.
I really hope it doesn't come to all that, but good luck! I'd gladly come and bash her for you if it were actually likely to do anything other than make the situation worse!
It's so sad that sick people like her use children as weapons against the world.

Unfortunately, the attorneys have nixed the idea of a tracking device, they say she could become even more unpredictable if she found it.
They didn't seem surprised when my brother told them about her preparations, I pray to God that means they already have someone watching her.
The evidence points to this weekend, we'll know if she fails to bring him back tomorrow (Sunday). Until then we're all on edge.
