If it was nearer the welsh/english border then we would be convinced. Definitely.
All that land (i could have allotments after all! And sheep...and chickens...). The house looks pretty crap, but i looked at one on the net the other day and fell in love with it - it has no bathroom, no kitchen, a cold water tap and an outside loo, it all needs complete redecoration, but the potential is there!
Hmmm...if only it was closer to England!!

Oh thats the one you were after is it? I know the seller - it is a gorgeous little croft, go for it ina
Stunning, stunning views and some reasonable land by Shetland standards. My husband's ex-classroom assistant owns it (he is a teacher in the local school to that croft, which has 6 pupils). Need a good bit of savings/equity for that one though, you can't get a mortgage on a crofting tenancy.
We made them move to Shetland (on much less than £250,000 but we don't have any land) for the same reason and although it was tough at first (I was ill, o/h had a school suddenly threatened with closure) we love it and have never regretted it.

There's another one, even cheaper, but without land (£37.000) - but this one is just so perfect...
Problem is, if I gave up my job here, I wouldn't get a mortgage - and without a mortgage, at least a fairly small one, I wouldn't be able to buy! Grrr.

I will, I will - later this year! I'm already getting Shetland withdrawal symptoms...
I've bookmarked the jobs pages for Shetland - and am generally keeping my ears open. You never know. Or I'll have to start a bakery up there - that was one thing I always missed - decent bread!
But I was told last time that there is somebody making cheese now?

There is that cheese stall - well, van, I'd say - they were at the farmers' market and in Lerwick itself, too. I asked there - I think it must have been at the end of 2006, as I didn't make it to Shetland last year
- they said somebody was just about to start it. Goats cheese, I think.
(They also had very scrumptious chocolate cake at that van!
