Re: what are you harvesting?

Strawberries - yum!, lettuces, parsley `n mint `n things, cabbages, carrots, goosegogs, rhubarb, last of the asparagus.

Re: Stiff plastic net to protect strawberries from bird atta

However - as I`ve agreed on another thread - in my half century of gardening I`ve never seen or heard of a bird being trapped by, or under, a net.
Perhaps they`re a bit more canny around here. :?

Re: New chickens

I`m not an expert but I wouldn`t think that four new birds would be too many. You obviously have enough space.
I`d be interested in the view of the more knowledgable ones among us because I`m in a similar situation - down to two layers and looking to integrate a small new flock.

Re: Sorry I've not been around

You`re an inspiration, Mrs F! - (Now if I could just cut out butter - - - - - :? ) I passed my driving test at the fourth attempt by acting! I`d just done a drama teaching course and my instructor advised me to roleplay 'confident driver'. He said, "Come on! You can maintain the role for an hou...

I remember my M-in-L making 'quilts' out of cut up old coats in old curtain covers.

That sounds good!
And, as the knitted fabic is so flexible, accuracy wouldn`t be such a major priority would it?

Re: Hand Sewing Patchwork

The paper templates ensure that all the patches are identical so they tesselate perfectly. If they don`t fit together well they don`t lie flat in the finished work. It`s not difficult or complicated really - once you make a start - women used to do their piecing sitting on their covered wagons on th...

Re: Hand Sewing Patchwork

The first time I did hand-piecing I didn`t even use paper shapes. I drew round a square on the back of cut out patches and made sure that I sewed along the lines with a sort of running stitch with occasional backstitches. It worked fine. I never use a sewing machine because I like to sew in the gard...

Re: How many resolutions have you broken

For the past five years or so I`ve said, "This is the year I finish the quilt!"
Squares all pieced and quilted - just need sewing together.

Crikey!
In half a century of gardening I`ve never had a bird trapped inside netting or with feet caught in it.

Re: Going car-free(ish)

I remember some years ago I went on holiday in Jersey - in the days when I still went away on holiday - and found the round-island bus service really useful.
Does it still operate?
Good luck with your resolution!

Re: Bee swarm

Thanks Od!
Makes sense now. Wish I`d listened to her country lore when she was alive instead of thinking that she was `just droning on`. She was a Salisbury Plain shepherd`s daughter and then a smallholder`s wife and was always talking about the rural life.
