Re: Bamboo ?

Yes it is invasive. I would only grow it in a pot for this reason. Years ago I on a gardening job I had they had huge clumps of it in a border and it was coming up in the lawn a metre from the edge of the plant. Also my current neighbour has some that he grows for canes as well as the appearance. It...

Re: Home made bone meal

Clever stuff, all. I'm really impressed. Curious though that bones can be burned so extensively and still be nutritious for plants. Probably best nobody tries to explain this, to me anyway, I know I'll struggle. I had an idea a couple of years ago that has yet to be researched/tested. Knowing that f...

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world

Oh yes I see what you mean, compared to labour. I expect the muck digger was glad to be in work in the dark months and that job at least would have kept him warm. good idea MKG. I've been a bit overenthusiastic on the seed sowing this year so will soon be throwing plants in every direction. If it ev...

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world

  @ OJ we've been reading about hot beds too and we'll probably make them from the manure if we get the goats. there doesnt seem to be too much information in books or online about hotbeds, seems to be an old fashioned method not really used nowadays, i dont know why though? seems like a ...

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world

Saffronsue, my pleasure. I enjoyed re-reading it and am glad I did because I had forgotten about the leaves recommended. Now I live on a corner house and all the leaves from street blow in my gate I'm thinking about having a go. Have sources of fresh manure already. Your in situ idea sounds worth tr...

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world

I've got a really good old fashioned gardening dictionary. It means a lot to me actually because it was a gift from my grandad when I first showed an interest in growing - I was about 11. It (Blacks Gardening Dictionary) was his favourite gardening book, he was a professional victorian style gardene...

Re: Rainwater harvesting project - next steps

In our 1930s semi the rainwater downpipe runs down the side of the house where we only have a narrow walkway and no room for butts. We could put a diverter and then a hosepipe along the side of the wall I suppose (also for bathwater which is on same wall) if only to save more water for garden. Only ...

24. When the zip has gone on your gardening anorak and it's pouring with rain peg the front together. It worked for me yesterday  I did consider putting a picture up on flickr but there is a limit to how barking you want to look online.

Re: Caffeine withdrawal symptoms

I had this problem (headaches) years ago when I was addicted to coffee and tried to give up. Worst thing was I was having sugar in every cup (lots). I got round it by mixing de-caff into my normal jar and increasing it a couple of times until I was over to de-caff with no problem. You can buy half c...

Good point. Although I don't think it would take long for a vulture to find them.
