I own two pigs and would like to breed from them, i've heard lots of conflickting info on what to do. Can anyone help and give advice on how to find a local boar?

It might help us if we knew where "local" is for you?

don't a lot of people use AI for getting a sow in pig?

AI works well for pigs, but only after the first litter - waste of time on gilts.

Local is in worcester area. I heard that AI only works well if you have the boar there to get the sow receptive?

Boars are the very best, but you can "cheat' especially if you know the signs of heat well. Though heat is sometimes much more difficult to detect in gilts (you didn't say how old your pigs were). There is "boar scent" available in an aerosol can through some AI supply companies - dunno who offhand and never used it - but you could spray it on a rag or whatever and put it in front of her or spray it on the other pig (Iwould try that!). Or you could borrow the scent from a live boar. Much safer than using a live boar but again, not as sure a thing! I have successfully used scent-on-a-rag from a sow in heat to entice boars-in-training to jump a dummy for semen collection. It should work the other way around too. Some sows show such strong heats whether there is a boar around or not....
