bulbs and tubers

I would like to add some colour to the garden and usually I add bedding plants to what I already have in the borders to add splashes of colour.
But being on an economy drive, this year I have decided to not bother with the bedding and buy stuff that will come up every year. I know this will probably be more expensive initially but next year I shouldnt have to spend too much.

Anyone grow any interesting summer bulbs or tubers that religiously come up year after year?

I don't know about bulbs and tubers - but Eschscholzia (I just love that name - they're California Poppies) give you months of flowering if you dead-head them. Leave the last few blooms to produce seed-heads, and they self-seed too. Plant a swathe of them near your door with Night-scented stocks, and you have sheer heaven.
