Cotton Questions.

When is the best time to sow cotton? I still have some more seeds that I'm hoping are still viable - am about to send some for a trade but want to let the recipient know when to plant them.
My last sowing didn't do well, being neglected didn't help, lack of water interspaced with too much water, weeds taking over the bed - you name it. Most of them did sprout.
How long do the plants live for? Will they grow in pots?
I'm in Australia and actually live not that far from Nev, about 15 minutes drive according to where is. It's the stalker in me coming out, Nev
