OH is in England and I figured it´s a good time to get something else, but what?

I´d like to try and avoid all that awful princess nonsense - I know, I know, everyone tells me it´s inevitable, but I´d rather not start it off!

Is there anything out there with strong female characters or just less soppy ones?

What do your LOs like? Mine is 16 months, so not a great attention span for narrative - I´ve tried her with the clangers but I think she just doesnt get it

Shrek is fun, and there are jokes in for the grown ups, I can recommend Thomas the Tank Engine for colour and number recognition, (even if the stories are maddeningly trite at times).

Can you get CBeebies over there? No adverts, generally educational (accidental learning), and it just keeps on coming...

The original Winnie-the-pooh on DVD... I bought it just after Christmas for £5 from Amazon... E loves it, and it is nice and gentle for her.

I personally love Pingu... I don't have any on disk, we watch them on Utube sometimes.

We watched Monsters Inc. with her and she was adorable; kissing Sully everytime he was on screen, and giggling in the right places... then Sully turned (well, it's his job to be scary) and then E was in tears for a good ten minutes, frightened the life out of her... poor soul
(If you haven't seen monsters inc, sorry... but you should it is a great film - probably not for under 3 though )

We´re not hooked up for TV, we just have a TV and a DVD player.....Spanish TV is too full of adverts from what I´ve seen.

look on the cbeebies website - you can play little clips and then see what she likes. my ds loves lazytown and nearly always eats an apple whilst watching it. it also has a strong female character - stephanie (sorry about the pink wig!!!).

however, he also tends to like stuff i don't which you just have to put up with!

Telletubbie and Night Garden - I find the storylines a bit undemanding, but ds2 was saying eh-oh at about 9 months in response, and goes mad for Macca-Pacca and the Tombliboos. I like to mix it up by saying "Hum Dum up your Bum" and ds1 always says "Its Nakka PANG!!!"

No wonder my brain is jelly...

i have some disney dvds that ill post out for ya hun my lot dont watch them

i work with kids as a nanny, and the favs at the moment are
Peppa Pig.....short stories, about 5mins each,
In the Night Garden(not mine tho...dont like programs where the characters dont speak clearly),
the wiggles...an aussie singing and dancing act....the 2 1/2yr old has loved the Wiggles for a yr or more, learing the songs and the actions.
then a few others that are aimed at older kids.

What about Pocahontas? She is a strong female character (disney one) I love that film. Lots of ethical stuff in it too:

I´m really wishing I´d asked before because DD is a little poorly with a cough and it´s gonna rain for the next few days .... Jungle Book is on right now and I suspect I´ll be hearing it over and over as she and the weather are not up for doing much else!

I have a children's favorites dvd from the bbc, it's great. got a fab selection of stuff on it.

How about "Charlie & Lola?" Actually it is intended for slightly older children, but the graphics and music are very appealing to toddlers.

And when they get older the diction and pronounciation are first rate. Plus the stories are good.

I use it as a teaching tool for helping me teach English to 8 to 11 year old French children.

My DD loves the In The Night Garden, and I've heard that they spent alot of money on speech experts, and although the characters don't use proper words, the words they do use encourage children to develop speech muscles, and to pronounce sounds that children often find difficult.
Plus I love seeing her do the little dances

What about something from Studio Ghibli?

Japanese Animation but dubbed by the likes of Kirsten Dunst.

I don't know the age of your DD but my girls were given Kiki's Delivery Service when they were 4 years old and still love it. Its about a girl witch who has to go to a new town to do her apprentishp.

My neighbour Totoro - about two sisters who move to the country with their dad to be nearer their mum who is ill. My youngest daughter loves this one.

For something a wee bit scarier there is Spirited Away, Cat returns, Princess Monoke (environmental themes).

There are a lot films but these are the ones that stand out for us.

We can't get enough of these. I would greatly recommend them as they have mainly girls in the central role in adventures. Not one bit of pink or a mention of Holidays anywhere

Yes from us (me and 22 month old Ellis) for In The Night Garden (yep, those speech therapists know their stuff - lots pf rhyming and early phonics), Charlie and Lola (Ellis LOVES this...), Peppa Pig, Thomas (of course!)...

Ellis also loves Pokoyo - I think that is actually Spanish, but over here it is voiced by Stephen Fry and even I'm addicted!!!!...

What about the Lion King (have to be aware of when she realises Simba's daddy is dead, though..), Finding Nemo....
