Beetroot leaves

Post: # 74544Post Ranter »

What do I do with them?

I still get a fortnightly organic veg box, will carry on until lottie is producing more, & today got beetroot leaves. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what they are.

I know I can use them raw as a salad leaf. Any more suggestions (the link from the home page doesn't work)?

Did they not have the beetroot attached?... how odd. :?

You can treat them just like spinach I think, though I found them too bitter and didn't eat much. blanche for 2 mins in boiling water, I guess... let us know how you get on.

Is it possible they are lettuce or cabbage? I just think it's odd to get the leafs but no root.

sounds like red or ruby chard. - either way, cook as spinach - ie stem until wilted, remove excess water. - then have them as they are as a veg, or use in a further recipe.. like in a quiche or curry etc...

Thanks guys. No labels come with the food & I just thought they were beetroot leaves as that what they look like. Stems are purple rather than red so I didn't think about chard. Either way, it seems the thing is to cook & eat like spinach, so that's what I'll do.

Won't be tonight though, friends are visiting so we're off to my favourite curry house.

I'll let you know about the leaves when I get round to eating them.

Red is right, steam until slightly wilted drain and pop into freezer bags, we've been doing that here since my Dad was alive (20+ yrs ago!)

I prefer beetroot leaves to spinach, and they're a lot easier to grow. I now grown m'beets for the leaves and not the root, as the OH is opposed to the roots making everything go pink... :?

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

I grew white ones but didn't like them - they seemed as odd as eating, say, a white strawberry! We chucked them away and just ate the leaves....

We had a real rainbow of beets, fom white to Chioggia striped to blood red

The white and striped beets are a lot milder, just depends on your personal taste
