I started an allotment in january this year and there are alredy 2 plum trees there.
One didnt fruit at all and the other one was so bitter i couldnt eat it (even cooked with sugar)
was wondering if anyone knew are there just varities of plums that are really bitter or is it likely to have been the weather this year and they might taste better next year?
(not sure whether to keep the trees or not)

Thanks

What did the plums look like? They might have been sloes or damsons, although I don't think either are bitter. Damsons are a bit sour and sloes make your mouth pucker up - impossible to eat raw!

They were quite big and sort of greeny yellow ish.

(under the plums were some plants the guy showing me round the allotment told me was comfrey. I offered someone from freecycle some cuttings of them but luckily they didnt turn up (and i didnt try to eat any) cos when they flowered several months later it was foxglove - oops!)

Hmm, sounds like a Greengage but they should be really lovely and sweet! I'd give them a reprieve though before getting rid of them just in case they improve by next year, you never know.
