having made it known to a local company that we would be happy to take any pallets going for our wood burner... they were more than happy has they would have to pay to get rid of the pallets (daft system if you ask me.. ) and they delivered a load... 40 pallets. they are stacked everywhere.. and there is another load coming soon!
Pallet wood wont last long in the wood burner.. but its free heat come winter. the only problem is himself keeps looking at it and saying 'but theres good wood in there'.. and not wanting to destroy it. i understand.. but we now have 40 pallets in our yard!!

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it!

Good luck on the sawing, stacking, storing etc. I hope for you you have help in the way of friends or equipment to make this happen. Free warmth this winter is nothing to scoff at, so congratulations despite the huge amount of work you're looking at.

ah pallet wood, I used to think that in a 1000 years people would think that there was a tree called pallet that died out after the oil age.

depending on what sort of pallet you can get a crowbar and strip them down which will take up less space and yes there is some good wood there.

or it is is all for the burner forget saws and axes, get a sledgehammer and smash them to pieces, again depending on the type of pallet you end up with burner size stuff or you might have some thicker pieces to saw down/reuse

also you will be left with nails in your ash

dismantelling pallets does take time if you are wanting the building timber from them ( been there done it).
would say, try and dismantle them, but at the first sign of problem, smash it saw it etc. Some pallets are put together and come apart easily, others arent.

I would say to OH if he can dismantle them faster than you can smash em for fire wood let him have em, if he can't then it is the fire place for them.

It is a crazy system - in France they are returned and reused. You can only get them if you have a builder as a neighbour..... I now have my veg patch plots nicely edged thanks to some pallets.

Well if anybody near Swindon wants some pallets we have hundreds at work to get rid of. You can't even put them in a skip at work. The skip collection company won't take them.

we are used to getting the good wood out of pallets.. there is a technique and it mostly involves moving on to another bit of pallet if the wood puts up a fight - our new hen house is part pallet...
otherwise we smash them up and accept nails in the ash...
