Gas Question

For those old crocs like me who can remember .....Town Gas.

Town gas which supplied the UK with Gas from Victorian times until 1973 did everything the North Sea gas that you use today does, infact it did a lot more as the by-products from producing it where used in everyday things.

The British and other Empires where built using it and Britain and other countries produced millions of tanks ships and aeroplanes with it and also fought 2 world wars using it. (point is...it was good enough then)

My question is........If Natural gas comes from under the ground and is a "Fossil" fuel...........then if we go back to using "Town" gas which is made from coal then this is also a "Fossil" fuel so basically there is no difference except that the UK will run out of North Sea gas in around 30 years and the UK has an estimated couple of hundred years of coal reserves.............so why cant we go back to producing Town Gas??

Also Town Gas i think can be made from Wood of any kind, so if we were to make gas from wood..........would this be more natural as we arent using fossil fuel in the form of Natural gas????

Do you think i need a hobby instead of asking stupid questions??

Yes, Paddy, I remember Town Gas, lamps in the house and collecting
coke from Gas Lane. (in a pram).
We were so poor, we drank tea with no sugar or milk, sometimes no tea, no cups, drunk it thru a rolled up newspaper. But we were happy.

Well Paddy, you are dead right. Wood can not only produce a very similar gas, but have almost all of the by-products as well and is a renewable resource. But that is a practicle idea so nobody will ever use it.
