Moon Gardening Experiment

Post: # 68112Post MaryContrary »

I'm designating a chunk of my allotment to a moon gardening experiment, as per that wonderful Cornish man RJ Harris and his tome Moon Gardening. The first step will be preparing the ground this autumn! I'm convinced it works, I can feel it my waters...

...anyone else interested in doing their own experiment? Or is anyone already gardening by the moon? It would be great to share experiences over the next season and beyond!

If we weren't moving, i'd be sorting it now.

I did a cross stitch a few years ago on lunar gardening, so i was going to follow those really simple rules.

But...i don't know how long we're going to be here, so i can't put anything in stone

Keep us updated though!

Hi Fee
Where are you moving to? Will you have a bigger garden?

Haven;t got a clue at the moment!
Dad's got to get a new job, and i can't afford to move out on my own, so i'll be going wherever they go!

I've said on another thread somewhere that dad wants to get a bungalow with some land and get 2 mobile homes, one for me, and one for my sister, so we want quite a large bit of land - dad's got his heart set on a smallholding now (i think its because i mentioned getting goats...), so it'll be in the middle of nowhere, and hopefully have enough land to do a decent job of growing veg, and have a big enough garden for a herb/kitchen garden and a flower garden for mum.

I'm quite excited about it actually! It'll be good to redesign another garden. I quite fancy one of those old fashioned herb gardens with the square plots - there's one at the Ancient House in Thetford which is really nice.

Dad's looking at Chester Area, Yeovil, Selby and somerset at the moment, but i don't actually know where we'll end up.

I've done moon gardening -ish for the last 2 years.......it's difficult to say how well it's worked since I can only compare with the previous year and the weather's been so different anyway. The main advantage for me has been that I've had a guide as to what to do when, which was especially confusing for me arriving in France with lots of British gardening books. I'm using a french alamanac which gives you ideas what to do for each moon phase - today it's earth up the fennel, plant out chicory and lettuce plants, and something to do with cardoons which I'm not growing so I haven't translated that bit! The test they did on Gardeners' World seemed to be positive so I'm going to keep with it....

Do you have any recommendations for good books on moon gardening (not that i need anymore books, but i haven't got any on moon gardening...and it will be useful when we move...really it will!)?

Hi Fee Fairy, I can't recommend any books I'm afraid. Apart from my almanac I've found most of my answers on the internet.....this site is quite good I think.

Hope this helps, though I know I'd probably rather have a book myself! (I have far too many how-to type books, then I can't decide which one to follow

 )
