Working with coir from Coconut Husks

Good Afternoon!
I am going to be heading somewhere where there will be an abundance of coconut "hair" (or coir) from coconuts, and wonder if anyone could share their experiences in using it?
Apparently it can be used for all sorts, including making brushes, turning it into coir filters (for filtering water for example), making mats and even rope!!
I am sure a lot of people will hopefully be interested in this...the main interest for me personally is what you would use to bind the coir...for filters, mats and ropes especially. Also, how to get it off the coconuts efficiently.
Thanks,
Duncan
