Alas poor compost heap, I knew it well :(

Post: # 61192Post possum »

Our 4 bay compost bin burnt down at the weekend, badly singina few trees and a large section of grass
I made the mistake of putting what I though were cold ashes on and not damping it down just in case. I had made a really good effort in collecting the green waste from work, so had a nice large heap.

Ah well, back to rebuilding and restocking it.

Oh nooooo... what a shame. At least you can use the ashes on the garden!

Shame about the trees and the grass... were you planning a major redesign of the garden then? :flower:

Yes, but not that section, we are desperately trying to plant more trees, not get rid of any. At least it was just an ornamental that went (still don't know what kind it is ). It will recover though. At least it wasn't any of the fruit trees.

I knew it was dry here - we have only had a few cm of rain this year and it is the worst drought for 100 years I heard on the news, but I hadn't realised quite how dry everything had got. It is mid winter and I am still watering young trees and the herb garden!

Crikey, that is a worry. I thought we had it bad for a while but nowhere near as bad as that. Here's praying for rain for you.

we, we are in a pretty dry bit of New Zealand, but fortunately have a borehole that has never run dry, so as long as we make the effort we can keep everything watered. However it is the effort that is the problem when the nights are dark
