Yup, I now have a total of .............one hive! placed securely on a pallet on the roof of the deep litter and worm sheds. And I got it up there without killing myself!
It really is the only place the local regs (laid down by Mrs Wombat) would allow bee hives. Anyway they are starting to settle in. I got an eight frame brood box and a matching super which is not yet installed. I will put some pictures on my blog.
This is so exciting, I've wanted bees for years!

Hi Nev, and congratulations!
we used to have 25 hives but had to give it up when our daughter became allergic to bee stings.

- love them! We still have quite a few bits and pieces of equipment, and if you want a hand or any advice/have questions feel free!

Woohooo - congrats!
I have been given two old hives, which I need to renovate - no bees yet. It's only a matter of another 5 years or so; I'm certain I'll get my bees in this lifetime. I hope.
An extractor isn't really worth it for just one hive; don't you have a beekeepers' club/group/association where you could borrow one? They do that here - so most small bekeepers don't own one.

Congrats Nev- exciting times! I've always wanted a bee hive but think it would be beyond me (they tend to leave me puzzled). I create nesting boxes for bumblebees instead.

Congrats Nev. I bet you will be like a bee in clover

with your new addition. Great stuff.
Cornelian, could you pm me with plans of the BB houses as I am keen to keep them around. They are great pollinators.

Congrats Nev! I'm keen on bees at the moment (just got my beesuit this am £3.99 from ebay-bargain!) are there the same problems over there that we are having? we are experiencing colony collapses and await the arrival of the small hive beetle which has made it to France so its only a matter of time

, we were told that its a good idea to have your chooks scrating about under the beehive as small hive beetle has a part of the lifecycle so the chooks get 'um then- yay for the chooks!
keep us up on your adventures
Kind thoughts

Thanks Deb,
We do get the beetle but I don't know if it will be a big issue for us, with the hive almost 2 metres off the deck. I have not heard of CCD being prsent in Aus, it is bloody scary though!

bummer about your bees Andy!

thought you meant me for a second
Good call Nev mate, apparently the bee population is dwindling world wide so anyone keeping them is really doing a service. I take off my hat to you.
