Hi all

I make alot of bread but find the flour either too expensive or... plain crap. I would really like to grow some grain but as I start to read about it I get a bit confused and usually fall over.

Has anyone had any experience with this, as any first hand advice would be a great help.

I just got some chookie wheat and broadcast it over a small patch, wheich fed a remarkable number of birds! But some did come up and I processed it but only got about a cupful of wheat berries. How much land do you have FC?

Hi. I've looked into growing grain this year, not for milling as the flour we buy from the mill is good, but instead for supplementing the chooks and rabbit fodder. I found a good website called Realseeds.co.uk (I think) which explains that the likes of wheat and barley have been bred for mechanical extraction of the seed, and so are less suited to the smallholder. They recommend Grain Amaranths instead (and have a couple of other ones too), so that's what I'll be trying this year.

Just out of interest, how do you intend to mill your grain to make flour? I keep reading that kitchen mills are cheap and readily available, but haven't seen any.
