as the subject says... was in a quite boggy and mossy bit on the croft. thought it looked like a smooth chunk of clear ice.(eh?)..roughly the size of my fist.. I poked it and it was all jiggly! EEEK! what is it?

Yes and no, it is lots of little see through 'eggs' (what do you call them?!) in a clump but each one has a dark dot in the centre. I think they would be found in a pond or ditch though and your jelly stuff sounds like it is on some wet land.
Isn't there some kind of bog fungus that is jelly like?

Came to this post just as the mystery was solved. I havew never come across fungus like that before, cheers for mentioning it. I feel educated now.

Ahhhhh, this post appart from educating is giving a warm glow (or should that be cold shiver) of nostalga! It reminds me of a bedsit I used to live in that had all these and more! The jellymoulds in the bathrooms were particularly impressive. It was finally condemned, but maybe they should have turned it into a national 'mould park'!

Not when I was trying to get warm water for a bath (never hot, nothing worked that well!!!) I'm not saying it was a bit of a slum, but I was glad when we had a mice infestation as they ate all the cockroaches - and I'm not joking!
