Fantasy-Ish island
*An escape to fantasy *
If we all clubbed together and we bought an Island and had an Ish community?
How big would it have to be to allow each of us to have enough land to be self supporting?
What specialities would we bring with us?
For example there's 4 of us- is 5 acres greedy? I bring my chickens, Veg growing and wine making. OH is good at historical/wilderness/survival stuff. He's a scientist and I was a Nurse so some practical skills in an emergency there too.
Anyone else want to come?
kind thoughts

If we were clubbing together for an ish island then we wouldn't need that much land as an individual because we could grow and nurture co-operatively. Everyone could lend a hand with the various jobs on the island and we'd all reap the rewards equally.
Ohh what bliss.
Ohh what bliss.

Ahh, very true I hadn't thought about that, maybe a couple of acres each would be enough- as an island too we'd have a coastline to 'farm' too. Not that I'm much good on boats to be honest

Wee Cumbrae would be my choice. I've already seen the details for it and it's a beauty!glenniedragon wrote:Here's a few to whet your appetites!

There's the big main house (12 bedrooms), the old keep, a couple of cottages, a studio flat, three lighthouse keeper's cottages, a massive greenhouse, stables, gardens, jetties, 684 acres etc etc etc.
Price? £2.5 million. Split it 10 ways and that's £250,000 each. Split it 20 ways and that's £125,000 each.
And for the full details have at look at http://www.humberts-leisure.com/uploads ... umbrae.pdf. PDF.

So... who do we pay the deposit to? I would.. if we could find enough people to share to bring the price down.Stonehead wrote: Price? £2.5 million. Split it 10 ways and that's £250,000 each. Split it 20 ways and that's £125,000 each.

Even when there were plenty, most of the folk were on welfare, not self-supporting.
Annares - 1988 to present
Canon Frome Court - 1979 to present
Beech Hill Community - a relative newcomer, 1994 to present
Christiana - 1971 to present
Twin Oaks - 1967 to present, and definitely a self-sustaining one
Black Bear Ranch in California - 1968 to present.
The Farm, Tennesee - 1971 to present
Ganas - can't remember when it started but it's still going after 30 or so years
Twin Oaks, another 30-year-old US commune
Given time, I could think of more. I think there are a couple of hundred communes/intentional communities in Europe and somewhere around 1,100 to 1,200 in the US. There are quite a few in Canada, Israel, Australia and New Zealand, too.
There are also many Christian and other religious communes as well as the ones for people with anarchist, hippy, alternative lifestle, eco-villager visions etc.
Can it be a coincidence that you listed Twin Oaks - twice

Given time, I could think of more...
Radfield 1978 to present, middle England
Monkton Wyld Court 1982 to present, Southern England
Monimail Tower Project, Fife, Scotland 1984 to present
The Community Project, SE England 1998 to present (nearly joined this one)
Laurieston Hall, SW Scotland 1972 to present.
The last one is probably the one with the most interesting history of those I've visited. It's been through a whole gamut of communal philosophies in its time, and still has a couple of the original residents there. This place and Radfield have a wealth of experience on how to survive communally. Radfield even runs occasional courses on it.
Have a look at the Diggers and Dreamers site for a fuller list of UK based examples.

"Boss da plane, Da plane"?

No, no Stonehead. I'm in for my share of the money but those cannon and the keep are MINE! I will make sure my Neighbour From Hell can't get me, one way or another.
As far as skills go, I'm good at ermm, ........ well, babysitting for a start, or so my daughters tell me. I'm happy to bring my livestock and plants, with associated knowledge and since I've been told many times that I'm a bit bossy, that's the Leadership sorted!! Where do I send the money?

I voted for med - look at all the wonderful veg you can grow there!
As for Ish Island...Count me in. Might have to sell a few (all) posessions, and do some unholy favours, but i'll get the cash!
Can i have one of the cottages..? I'm not convinced you'd all want to live with me or the puppy!!
