Does any one have any experience with or any ideas about how to get use out of old tyres, I dont mean in a big way as in grinding it etc, I mean ways which can be done with diy tools, or as they are.The best answer will be selected at random and will win a life time supply of used tyres.

P.S. Only kidding, i'm keeping all my used tyres to myself! get back
My idea is to pile 3 up. Fill them with soil and pop the water butt on top. I was then going to drill holes in the side and plant strawberries. I'm not sure if they would be stable enough to hold the water butt though.
I have to get 2 new tyres at the weekend so going to see if they will let me keep the old ones.
Not only are they your tyres, but if they dispose of them for you, they may charge you a disposal fee. Most places will do this automaticaly, since not many people will ask for the old tyres back (you'll probably be the only one). So if you keep them, make sure they don't charge you for their disposal.
But, on he other side of the coin, be aware (in the UK, at least) that old tyres are increasingly difficult to dispose of if you ever want to chuck them away. Our local authority won't even accept single ones at the corporation tip - these days it's a job for a specialist waste contractor (hence the disposal fee at the tyre fitters).
In my experience (here at least) if you approach a tyre sales place with a request for used tyres they practically throw them at you! Be aware that there may be some issues with toxic leachate from tyres when using them for food crops.
I'm currently planning to make a four tyre wormery.
we are using quite a few to make a shadey area at the allotment. we're planting them up with climbing squashes, cucumbers, sweetpeas etc with strawberries, marigolds and poached egg plant round the edges and in between.
slightly concerned about wombat's post though....will have to look into that
I too, will be using tyres as planters this year and have for several years now. I'm hoping I can talk a friend of mine into letting me have his old tractor tyre Super-sized garden bed in the round.
