I started growing these about a month ago, from some stones from some lychees that found their way into my tummy!

I started them off on top of the radiator, in a sealed sandwich bag with some wet kitchen roll.



I've now transferred them to glas jars with wet kitchen roll - the jars will then act like a greenhouse, and being glass, they'll hold the heat better.

How long do they take to bear fruit??

hmm...i did think of the possible p0rn implications.

Apparently, it will take 15 years to fruit. 15 long years. So, i'l be keeping them in pots til they really get too big, then planting them in a garden. I say 'a' garden because i don't know where i'll be living when they get too big.

It was an experiment more than anything, just to see if i could, and to have a bit of excitement over the winter months!!

They seemed to have resized OK. I have noticed that Photobucket can take a while before changes like that take effect, so you resize a pic, then check it, and it doesn't seem to have changed, so you resize it again. Then, when you finally see the picture link on the forum, it's half the size you were expecting.

Ta Muddy. I didn't want huge pictures that would cause trouble for dial-up people.

The Lychees are cute...and i'm really pleased they grew, what with it being cold!!

15 years to go...

right, so one of my lychees is now 5" high, and another is 2" high.

I want to pot them up, but i'm worried about shocking them. I don't want to kill the little things, i want beautiful lychee trees!!

Anyone got any ideas? i think i'm going to put some potting compost in a pot, leave it on the radiator for a few days to warm it all through, then plant the plants in it. Thoughts?

I've emailed the people at lycheesonline.com so i'll keep you updated on what they say.

They should be OK, especially if you put a plastic bag over them to keep them humid and draught free.

What do lychees turn into - a bush, a tree? How big?

they turn into a tree - i've read that the trees can be anything from 6ft tall to 35ft tall. I saw one pic that looked like a small cherry type tree, and another one that looked like some kind of woodland tree like a weeping willow or an oak or something, so i really have no idea...

ok...the plan at the moment is to stick an empty mayonnaise jar in the dishwasher, then transfer the seedling into it. This should give the other one space to grow, and give the bigger one more space (the leaves are touching the top of the jar now!).

I tried taking the lid of the jar off for a while to let the tree grow, but it went yellow and shrivelled looking. I put the lid back on, and its green and healthy looking again. Bit worried about this humidity problem now.

Had to do a quick search, I had never heard of them before. Hope all goes well when you transfer them.

I trasnferred it to the larger jar yesterday, i just put the wet kitchem roll in the bottom again. It seems ok today.

Still got to get it some compost to put in a pot. I'm looking for stuff that drains well, but the roots can still get a good hold on it - they're grabbing the kitchen roll at the moment.

Not heard anything from Lycheesonline - maybe they were a bit to serious to answer strange questions. I'm going to try emailing a few more places.

I wish i'd find out more about these things before i start sprouting seeds...

I've got some carob seeds sprouting, and some coffee beans that i put on the radiator yesterday...haven't got a clue what to do with them when they grow either!!

I got an e-mail back from crocus.co.uk.

I've got to get some ericaceous compost (the one with perlite and easy draining...right?!) and plant the tree in that, then, take it outdoors during the hot days in summer. I've got to harden it off over a year or so (by which time it'll be small tree size) and then plant it in a sunny spot in the garden, making sure that i cover the roots with fleece when it looks like it might be frosty.

All is not lost!!

The carob is sprouting nicely, it shook off the seed husk yesterday, so i've got some leaves. I'll pot that in the same compost as i use for the lychee.

No movement from the coffee beans yet. They've swollen a bit, but no sprouting signals yet.
