G'DAy all,

Has anyone tried backyard/small scale aquaculture? I am interested in peoples experience.................it is something I want to have a go at, but would like to find out what others have done.

I subscribe to a permaculture magazine. They did a great piece on it. I will try and find that issue if you would like. I will be trying my hand at catfish soon. My uncle use to raise perranas(not sure how to spell) and all kinds of crazy fish. As a child, I use to walk with him to the ponds he had built in his yard to feed them chickens. As he got older he scaled down to guppies in aquariums in the house. He used giant steel drums. He would go about to different manufacturing places and take all kinds of their garbage and turn it into something wonderful! He was quite the eccentric type.

no, but if there is a market for backyard herons, do let me know....

we have a pond... last year i caught 6 ashagas in a local river, with a rod & line...
they were tiny, so i kept them alive, brought them home, and put them in... was warned by a mate that the key is not to make a sudden change in temperature... so i released them very slowly...

see them all the time... they are thriving... and we have less mosquitos

gonna try to get some sunfish to join them this year

What is an "ashaga"....are they edible?

yes, they are edible, but i dont know what they are called elsewhere...

the rivers here are full of them, in schools, hiding in the shallows, occasionally grow to a couple of kilos... but locals don´t give them a chance!!
