Hi,
We have a gas Rayburn that does our central heating, the other side of the wall from it is the lounge fireplace where we will be putting a wood burner. What I'd like to know is if it is possible to have a back boiler on the woodburner so that when we have a fire then rayburn would automatically shut off and only fire up if the woodburner was not producing enough heat.

Has anyone done this or know that it can be done.

I don't know how Rayburns are regulated when they run the central heating but normally you would expect some time of feedback from the water tank which will control the cutoff. - so if both the Rayburn and the woodburner are heating the same water tank it would work automatically.

Its perfectly possible to have a water tank heated by two methods (a lot of people have a gas powered system which is supplemented with an electric immersion) but whether you can get that running via a back boiler I haven't a clue

I'm sure if you asked a local installer they'd be more than happy to work it out though - because they'd have a nice days work in there getting it going I reckon. It doesn't sound too difficult but youd need knowledge of what is actually available to know how cheap and easy it could be done :)
