Sick Rabbit

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but can the Mod move it if not, please? Thanks.

I was just driving the wee lad down the lane to meet his pal, and there was a wild rabbit on the lane.

His fur was in pretty bad shape, but I have put that down to the autumn moult.

However, he was doing that 'leap slowly, wander about' sort of jumping, rather than the 'mad dash for freedom' jumping that I am more familiar with in a wild rabbit.

We drove closer and closer and he just hopped about aimlessly, until we were right next to him, when he hopped into the verge. I stopped the car right next to him (so close that I could easily have opened my door and lifted him into the car), and he just snuffled around the grass.

His eyes were completely closed. Both of them. His face wasn't swollen that I noticed and I could see no wounds or displaced limbs. He just looked like an incredibly scruffy rabbit with his eyes closed.

Whad'ya think? Mixi? Poison? Are my own rabbits at risk? The cats and hens? Do I need to report this?

Sick wildlife worries me :(

Good question. Dont' know the answer but everytime I have come across a mangy looking rabbit with bad eyes, (which isn't often) I have put it down to Mixi.

I am sure someone knows the answer here.

seems like mixi
if it is it is mainly spread from rabbit to rabbit in their warrens as far as i can remember so yours should be ok
there is also a pneumonia type bug that rabbits get which makes them snuffly

Someone on NEEPS posted an article that tell that myxi can be transmitted to domestic rabbits thru fleas. Nice.

Its Myxi, and yes Domestic Bunnies do get if from Fleas, My daughters Rabbit has just died from it. Rabbit doesn't live with us , but with me ex who hasn't had the boys rabbit vacinated yt or even checked by a vet, so I'm guessing that won't be far behind.

Myxi is nasty causes blindness and deafness, so lots are put out of their misery when they simply walk in front of cars having not heard or senn them.

sounds like myximytosis - lots of rabbits get it and the symptoms are just as you described. its a fatal disease, and the best thing that you can do if you see a rabbit like that is to kill it. That way there is less of a chance of it spreading. It was quite bad where we lived a couple of years ago, and a friends daughter lost all 6 of her pet rabbits. :(
