Rented flat
What alternative energy options (if any) do you have if you rent a flat/ room?

Re: Rented flat
If you mean off grid, I would think not many options, all flats and houses would be hooked up to services like gas and electricity, so you would have a meter and still pay the standing charges or you would be charged for the services in with the rent.

Re: Rented flat
It depends what you want it for and where you're situated. We have a nifty solar panel - just powerful enough to recharge our mobile phones and you can get bigger ones that will recharge laptops.
So if you're southish facing something like that might be handy. Any bigger might be difficult.

I was thinking mostly to charge my mobile phone, kindle and tablet (maybe laptop but don't mind).

I think we got all ours (we have one in the polytunnel too) from Ebay.

The 12v kits might be what you are after for a small system to learn on.
