Hey everyone,

A few weeks ago I took a cutting from one of the brambles that grow by the roadside. It was a lovely thick thorny (oww) piece. I took the lieves off but left the buds and put it in a nice big pot. I was thrilled when leaves appeared. But soon after all the leaves started hanging turned brown and died. Can you troubleshoot with me on what went wrong?

I think your piece of bramble probably put all its energy into making new leaves instead of new roots. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it's still alive and making roots now, or will recover at some point and come back to life, just when you thought you'd had a narrow escape!

I think brambles are normally propagated by layering - that's certainly how they spread themselves naturally. I also suspect that successfully propagating from cuttings depends upon whether you mean it or not. If you WANT to do it, cuttings wither and die. On the other hand, leave a bit of a bramble lying anywhere accidentally and you have a problem for life

If you can't use layering, I'd have a go at getting a bit of root. That's bound to work.

And I thought it was impossible to kill bramble... Mine just propagates itself, whether I want it or not! I agree with everything MKG and Zech have said. Just let it get on by itself, and it should work. (If not, I'll send you some of mine!)

I think you're right, ina. I'm fairly certain it'll just be shutting down for the winter. Patience, lmr, I'm fairly certain you'll see new life in the spring - but cut those buds off first, it needs its energy to make roots.

And be careful where you put it, once established it will take over everything.

I planted it, it did nothing, two years later I dug it up and planted it in the tunnel, two years later I dug it up and lobbed it, it was exactly the same size as when I bought it 4 years earlier.

Roos, it ought to work if you take another cutting later in the autumn as that's the normal time for cuttings to strike. Leave it outside all winter and then in the spring it should burst into life and grow roots as well this time. It might be wise to do more than one though, several cuttings will guarantee they will ALL grow.

We repotted ours and it's added roughly half as much again since April, so I'm hopeful it will be fine. The biggest problem is where to put it - between the wind and the birds the only two other specimens I've seen in these here parts never get as far as ripe fruit. Still the flowers will be good.

I was planning on throwing it out but I think I'll leave the cutting in it's pot now and maybe put some more cuttings in there. I know brambles are horrible but I only have a balcony so I only have to worry about touching the earth in the other pots. If it gets in there I'm just as doomed as the rest of you.

2) Next April,buy a thornless one (about 2 euros ) from Aldi/Lidl.

I'm glad you mentioned thornless, Ojay, I would go that route, much nicer, I think I also saw either raspberry or blackberry in dwarf form to grow in pots.

All in all i call this thread a SUCCESS!
