I'm hopingto buy 1 or 2 new apple trees at the Festival of Apples next weekend(14th). Fiesta looks like a good choice for organic growing as it's easy and keeps well. On the other hand it would be nice to have a heritage variety. Is there a heritage and desease resistant apple?

We've an enormous bramley - more cookers than we can eat but I'm looking for dessert apples.

I bought some trees from Walcot Nursery, they specialise in fruit trees for organic growing, they have a website and information, I also have a book called the Fruit and Vegetable finder from the heritage seed library, it has lots of different varieties of heritage fruits the descriptions and who stocks them and in the front the counties where all the fruits originated. I have to say my Discovery apple (c1949) has fared very well in the worst of the conditions the last couple of years, the leaves have stayed green and unblemished, the fruit I got last year was very good

We added a tree to our orchard when our son was born 9 years ago. He's an "Adam" so it seemed appropriate to plant an apple tree. We chose an Adams Pearmain which is an old variety.

It is a lovely eater - a cross between an old English russet and a pippin. Crops well for a young tree and is resistant to scab.

It all comes down to your personal preference, Here in the centre of the apple growing universe, over a season ,our greengrocer will have 10-15 different varieties of local grown apples,so I'm planting a couple of varieties I don't see so often,Ellisons Orange (far better than Cox) and best of all the sweetest Cooker I've ever tasted Annie Elizabeth,and this one keeps 'till April ,(honest!)
