2 months after the fox took our last batch of chickens, I have re-turfed the compound and the grass is lovely and in need of a trim... so i got in a new batch of 4 - this lot are only 14 weeks old, and comparitively like babies... the last last lot were noisy and independent... this lot are scaredy and stick together. I'm guessing the one one most often at the front of the group will become the leader and top of the pecking order?

They have no idea about how to be a proper chicken yet... they huddle in a corner instead of roosting... they are just having a go at scratching, and eating grass. they've got the hang of pooing though

fascinating stuff... its good to have chickens again even if I'll have to wait a month or two for eggs

Don't worry you won't have lovely re-turfed grass for long !!

Chickens are highly addictive and worth it though :)

and they go to sleep huddled together in the corner, and when they wake up in the morning hop on to the roosting perch!

At least they can find their way into the henhouse at night...

Update - they like all the major scrap food groups - leftover rice, leftover potato (peelings) and leftover pasta (not too keen on the cheese sauce - they keep wiping their beaks!)

and they love worms

Just going through this myself. Fox took ours last week. Still pretty cut up about it but I've enquired after some new birds all the same.
