I heard once that using worm casts for growing seeds is really good. Does anybody know how to make one of these little worm fams, I saw them years ago in a garden centre (lots of money). I remember that somehow it stacked and you remove a part every now and then. Apparently you can remove the part without getting any worms in it. Anybody?

I made my own from scrap wood and left over polystyrene insulation. It's really just a large insulate box with wire on the bottom - heavier than chicken wire but that sort of thing. Stuck some horse poo in the bottom then layered it up with ordinary compost and a topping of leaf / grass type stuff. I feed the worms from the kitchen waste and garden eg old brassica leaves at themo. The worms came from wiggly worms website. You want to keep it as fullas poss and at the right temp. Around 10 - 15 deg c is good. Once a year you take the top layers off - which contains the worms and get to your worm cast at the bottom. I have yet to do this. I'll see if I can find more info on the net later when I've got better access.
