Not as in a bunch of kittens, but as in the stuff cats are supposed to use as a toilet. I'm looking after 2 cats for nearly 3 weeks and they produce an amazing amount of incredibly smelly poo. Can this, together with the litter, be put onto the compost or should it be all thrown in the dustbin?

That's where it went this morning but I was wondering if someone was going to tell us about their huge tomatoes they've grown thanks to used cat litter compost... Unlike this morning when I emptied the thing, I won't be holding my breath.

I have put small amounts in the composting pile with our humanure but only as I know it gets to the hot temp needed to kill the bacteria. In UK, I bag it and put it in the dog poo bin over the road! It gets emptied frequently...dont know where it goes, probably the landfill! Not an option for you, I should think. Not sure what the litter is made of either, so your bag and bin it is probably the safest choice!

poo in the loo. Litter in the compost. Kayolite clay type or similar will be fine. cat poo should be dry and easy to remove

I'm inclined to agree. Though you could dig holes and bury it all and it would eventually rot down (as per humanure, used by many rural cultures like this) However, I'd want to know it was somewhere I wouldn't be putting a spade into for a good few months, as it sticks like glue and smells truly awful until it finally dissolves.

I use layers pellets for cat litter. It's a fraction of the price and is quite good at keeping the smell in. I do the poo in the loo bit, but I then chuck the spent litter under bushes around the edge of the garden. Helps to define the cats' territory.

I strongly suggest the dustbin !

as for the high quantity of smelly poo, this is usually caused by cheap food.
try to convince the Pet owner to spend more money on high quality food,
the cats will eat less, poo has nearly no smell, so you're changing litter less often.
I haven't done the math, but some say the expensive food will save you money
in the long run. I just know My Cats are much more healthy...worth every penny.

Healthy cats love watermelon :)


And a Healthy tuxedo cat can roll in the soil and not get dirty...it's amazing, I know.

I remove the poo each morning and put it on the lit fire in my woodburner and reuse the litter as long as I can.
