Does anyone have any experience in alternative, self sufficientish toilet paper? Can you make your own?
Can you just use Newspaper, and what effect will that have on the plumbing?
Any ideas?

In some countries they don't use toilet paper. You sort of hose down the crack of your backside washing your hands afterwards.

Bidets. If done right they can be gravity-fed.

6" nail and the "News of the World" used to be the standard, but now they have gone, I dare say I will have to lower my standards to the Sun

The mind boggles at what exactly you did with the 6" nail.

OK, serious head on.
You either use newspaper then throw it in a bin then compost it or burn it later. You don't put that down the drains!
Or you use a jug of water and your hand, don't ask me for instructions though!
Or you make wiping cloths as per this forum - some use them just for pees and some go the whole hog and use them for bottie wiping as well - then just bung in washing machine and reuse.
There you go, yes I've been around this forum for too long!

Anyone who's seen
This Girl's Life will have a chuckle at this thread.
Another alternative is to use the absolute minimum amount of tissue - just enough to take the thick off - then have a damp cloth/flannel dedicated to the task of cleaning up the rest. Rinse it in hot soapy water.
Another is to use a compost toilet. Newspaper is perfect then.

Newspaper is the obvious option I suppose, and throwing it in the compost, or using a compost toilet ould be the most straightforward way of disposing of it. But I was wondering if anyone has any experience of making their own toilet paper that you can just flush into a normal toilet, to see if this can be done with minimal changes to one's ordinary lifestyle!
For example (And I know it would be a lot of effort), would it be worth making your own paper in the same way that you'd make your own paper for greetings cards etc, only making it really thin....
The extra effort would definitely make you use less!!!!

I wouldn't if I was you - you'd end up with more sh1t coming off it than going on to it!

I used a jug with a few refills of water to wipe my bottom in Nepal... it's surprisingly effective, you need to use your hand a bit while pouring but you get used to it. As long as you wash your hands afterwards.

I'm such a bidet convert that I never feel properly clean when I visit the UK, despite everyone having the fluffiest loo roll imaginable. The added bonus, is that we use barely any of the cheapest loo roll

The Yellow pages! As students we used the yellow pages and we put it down the lav and it didn't block it up. Was quite interesting too as depending on how u were feeling depended on what pages u used for wiping!!
